Captain’s Diary

Captain/Past Captain @ Liphook — Thursday 24 July

Probably one of the best courses I will play this year – without doubt the greens come into the top 3 played this year so far – big, fast, smooth, accurate greens, you always feel in control of the ball and it does what it is supposed to do.

I had the pleasure of sharing this experience with one of most senior, well preserved past Captains with a reputation for being a steady but determined winner of competitions, who takes no prisoners and only expects the very best from his playing partners – no pressure then – but of course I refer to the one and only smooth operator, Richard Broderick.

With his guidance and experience, over many years of this course, we managed a very creditable third place out of 18 or so clubs coming in with 64 points over 34 holes of dreaded foursomes stableford (not as bad as medal!) competition. The winners achieved 66 and second was 65 – so just pipped at the post – oh! those couple of missed putts.

I have to say a very enjoyable day – an excellent result, played on a golf course and with a past Captain, both of whom are worthy of their reputations.

The Seniors Open Sunningdale – 23 to 26 July 2009

Without rambling on for too many paragraphs, let me just say what a joy it was to be amongst the worlds top players, who although were in their prime back in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s are still magnificent to watch today and pleasure to behold.

As you will know we were asked to marshal the 12th (SI1) hole of Sunningdale for the Seniors Open. Anthony Lawrence, my right hand man on this occasion and known as the “Team Leader” did a great job in controlling, not only me (and we all know how hard that bit is), but also made sure that Joanna, Peter, David, Maggie, Andy, Geoffrey, John and others that I was not able to meet, had a great and enjoyable time and ensured the 12th hole was run in a military fashion to make life as simple as possible for the contenders.

We were able to witness wonderful golf, played on a remarkable golf course with very respectable amounts of spectators, a galaxy of great players, some of whom did ask my advice about their swing plane, swing tempo and putting technique – NOT!

It was really great to see so many CHGC members there on the various days both as spectators and supporting Glen Ralph, who performed very well in the top echelons of the Senior Game. I was particularly impressed when on the second day on the 12th hole that Glen drew his ball into the very deep rough on the left of the hole in order to come and say hello to me, I thought that was a very nice touch!
